Socialtecture is an approach to understanding and shaping the built environment through the lens of life.

A fusion of SOCIAL LIFE and ARCHITECTURE.

Socialtecture is a new profession that merges social life and architecture.

It goes beyond traditional architecture and urban planning by fundamentally shifting the perspective towards life itself.
Socialtecture environments emerge from a mindset, a framework, and a toolbox rooted in living systems and social intelligence.

At the heart of Socialtecture are nine universal principles of living systems – the 9 Socialtecture Principles of Life. They serve as an actionable compass, guiding us toward positive change: urban beauty, sustainability, and the common good.

Are they really? Take a closer look.

When decisions about our cities become built reality, what gets the most attention, the most space, the biggest budgets, the loudest voices? Cars, construction, consumption are systems that organize and occupy space, but don’t necessarily serve life. Everything lifeless seems to have a lobby.

With Socialtecture, we change that. We bring social life – the relationships, everyday rhythms, lived experience – back from the margins to the center of how cities are shaped. We work through the lens of life to reconnect what has been split apart: urban life and urban space.

Through the School of Socialtecture, we act as a lobby for life – advocating for cities that are not only built, but truly lived.

Socialtecture fuses social life and architecture. It is a new professional discipline that combines knowledge about social dynamics with architectural expertise. Instead of seeing the builit environment as static objects, Socialtecture understands places as living systems. It´s mission is a new building and planning culture that puts life first

What are the Socialtecture Principles of Life?

The 9 Socialtecture Principles of Life are the foundation of Socialtecture. They are a set of universal life-based principles, distilled from decades of research and practice to be applied in architecture and urban development – and in any field where systemic, life‑centered thinking is crucial. The principles serve as an orientation framework (a “compass”) for thinking, designing, and acting in projects – from city centers and schools to neighborhoods and third places.

What is the School of Socialtecture?

The School of Socialtecture is an educational platform empowering urban professionals to think, design and act in ways that put life – and with it social life – at the center of cities.
You work on your own project and lift it to the next level – even the smallest project makes a difference.
You connect with like‑minded people, share struggles and ideas, and become part of a growing circle of change.

Were does the term Socialtecture come from?

The term Socialtecture was coined by architect and urban designer Julia Erdmann as a new word combining social life and architecture.

How can I refer to Socialtecture in my own work?

Socialtecture is a registered EU trademark. Its use is therefore protected and tied to agreed usage rights. Through the School of Socialtecture, you can train in Socialtecture – and, step by step, obtain clearly defined rights to use the brand in your own work and communication.

Why does Socialtecture work in English and German?

Socialtecture is a European concept, positioned among others within the context of the New European Bauhaus. We connect people and projects across cities and countries – and English helps us do that. Most of our courses and the upcoming masterclasses are in German, but we also run English-language programs and learning journeys to projects and events across Europe where English is the working language.

What do we mean by „social“ in Socialtecture?

“Social” is meant in the sense of social life – real life with relationships, everyday routines, uses of space and community, everything that makes places truly feel alive. Instead of merely planning places, spaces and buildings, Socialtecture always asks how life actually works and how spaces can support and strengthen shared life – in terms of connection, mutual support and shared responsibility.

Why do we „lobby for life“?

Socialtecture exists to make sure that life itself has a strong, non‑negotiable voice in how we plan and build cities. “Lobby for Life” is the commitment to give everyday life – people, relationships, care and community – a powerful voice wherever decisions about space, money and urban futures are made.

Instead of treating people’s lives as a by-product of planning, Socialtecture puts “life per square metre” at the center of every decision. It insists that places must serve real life: everyday routines, relationships, care work, community, recovery, play, growing up and growing old. Life needs a lobby – just as loud as the lobbies of cars, concrete and capital – and it should sit as an equal voice at every decision table.

Because in the end, cities were never meant for spreadsheets or images in glossy brochures. Cities exist for one purpose: for life – and Socialtecture is here to defend that purpose, project by project, decision by decision.
